How to get noticed by a hiring manager without connections

Apply through the official channel, find the person who would manage you, and send them a short note: one result that matches their team's problem and a link to proof they can check in a minute. A referral helps, but a specific, useful message can get read without one.

1. Apply first, then reach out

Most companies still need you in their system. Apply, then message, and say that you've applied so they can find your application.

2. Find the right person

  • The job posting sometimes names the team or the manager.
  • On LinkedIn, search the company for the team name plus "manager" or "lead".
  • Company blogs, talks and podcasts often name who runs a team.

Read the posting for the problem the team is hiring to solve. Open with one result of yours that addresses it, in a sentence. Leave your life story out.

4. Make the proof one click

A busy manager won't download attachments from a stranger. One link with your results, a short video and samples is easy to open between meetings. (What is a pitch page?)

5. Make it easy to say yes

Ask for something small. "Would a 15-minute call be useful?" gets more answers than "Please consider me for any openings."

6. Follow up once, with something new

If there's no answer, one follow-up about a week later with a new, relevant detail is reasonable. After that, let it go. (How to get a recruiter to reply)

FAQ

Is it OK to message a hiring manager directly?
Yes, if you've applied and you keep it short and relevant. A clear, specific note is easier to act on than a generic application.
What if I can't find the hiring manager?
Message the recruiter for the role, or the most senior person on the team you can identify.
Should I connect on LinkedIn first?
Either send a connection request with a short note or message directly if that's open. Keep it to the role, one result and your link.
What should I send instead of a resume?
A link to a page with your results and a short video. (See what to send instead of a resume.)
